America’s Favorite Book: The Bible By Scott Presson The Bible is America’s favorite book according to a new survey. In an online poll conducted by Harris Interactive, the Bible is number one among every demographic group. Margaret Mitchell’s Civil War epic “Gone with the Wind” was the nation's second favorite book while J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” fantasy series nabbed third. Unfortunately, research by the Barna Group suggests that the Bible is read by only 45 percent of Americans in a typical week. Although Americans may disagree politically, the Harris survey also showed that for Republicans, Democrats and Independents, the top two books are the same, “The Bible” and Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind”.
